Importing Cars from Canada — What You Need to Know

Canada is an attractive alternative to the USA. Less competition, better vehicle condition, competitive prices.

About importing from Canada

Canada — an alternative to importing from the USA

When thinking about importing cars from North America, the United States is usually the first thing that comes to mind. However, Canada is an extremely attractive alternative that many buyers are not aware of. The Canadian market offers a wide selection of vehicles, often in better mechanical condition, and competition among importers is significantly lower — resulting in lower auction prices.

USA Import Auto is a family business with over 20 years of experience in the automotive industry, specializing in importing cars from North America — both from the USA and Canada. Our portfolio includes vehicles imported directly from the provinces of Ontario, British Columbia, Alberta, and Quebec.

Why consider importing from Canada? Canadians take excellent care of their vehicles — mandatory safety inspections and stricter emission standards. On top of that, the Canadian dollar (CAD) exchange rate is 25-30% lower than the US dollar — additional savings for the buyer.

Comparison

Differences between importing from Canada and the USA

Importing from Canada differs from importing from the USA in several key aspects:

Auction platforms

Impact Auto Auctions (the largest Canadian platform), Adesa Canada (dealer auctions, the Canadian equivalent of Manheim), Copart Canada. Fewer participants = less bidding competition.

Currency — CAD vs USD

The CAD exchange rate is historically lower than the USD, meaning the same listed price translates to a lower cost in your currency. The exchange rate difference works in favor of importing from Canada.

Emission standards

EPA/CARB + local regulations. British Columbia has standards similar to California (CARB). Canadian vehicles pass European homologation without issues.

Documentation

Vehicle Permit (ON) or Registration Certificate. History: CARFAX Canada / CARPROOF. Full service history, accident records, mileage verification. Quality comparable to the USA.

Why Canada?

Advantages of importing from Canada

Importing from Canada has several clear advantages over importing from the USA:

Better mechanical condition

Mandatory safety inspections (Safety Standards Certificate) with every ownership transfer in Ontario, BC, and Quebec. Brakes, suspension, lighting — all must be in working order.

Less competition

Fewer buyers at Canadian auctions than at Copart/IAAI. Lower final prices — especially at Impact Auto and Adesa Canada.

Lower premium prices

BMW, Mercedes, Audi, family SUVs 10-20% cheaper at Adesa Canada. Lease returns: 2-3-year-old vehicles with 40-60k km, showroom condition.

Shorter shipping route

Halifax/Montreal to Bremerhaven: 2-3 weeks — one week shorter than the US East Coast, two weeks shorter than the West Coast.

Less corrosion

British Columbia — mild climate, no corrosion issues. Standard undercoating in many provinces. Vehicles from Vancouver/Victoria are virtually rust-free.

Rich equipment

Identical to US specs + winter packages: heated seats and steering wheel as standard. Canadians tend to opt for higher trim levels.

Step by step

The Canada import process step by step

The import process from Canada is similar to the USA, but has a few specific elements. Below we describe every stage — from vehicle selection to registration in Poland.

Step 1

Vehicle selection and verification

We browse listings on Impact Auto Auctions, Adesa Canada, and Copart Canada. We verify the vehicle history through CARFAX Canada — mileage, service records, damage history, and financial status. This stage takes 3-7 days.

Step 2

Deposit payment and budget estimation

Refundable deposit of PLN 3,300. We convert CAD to PLN at the NBP exchange rate and present an estimated total import cost breakdown.

Step 3

Bidding at the Canadian auction

We bid on Impact Auto (online, weekly cycles) and Adesa Canada (live + online). You receive an instant notification of the result.

Step 4

Payment and vehicle pickup

48-72 hours to complete payment. Detailed invoice with CAD to PLN conversion. We arrange pickup from the auction yard.

Step 5

Inland transport to port

Flatbed truck to port: Halifax, Montreal, or Toronto. Rate depends on distance. Transit time: 2-7 days.

Step 6

Ocean freight to Europe

To Bremerhaven or Gdynia. Container or RoRo — rate depends on route. Transit from Halifax: 12-18 days — significantly shorter than from the USA.

Step 7

Customs clearance, registration, and pickup

Same fees as from the USA: customs duty 10%, VAT 23%, excise tax. Headlight conversion, vehicle inspection, registration. From auction to registration: 5-8 weeks.
